MBDA has successfully conducted the first launch of the Akeron LP guided anti-tank missile, a fifth-generation air-to-ground weapon developed under the MAST-F (Future Tactical Air-Ground Missile) program.
The announcement was made by the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), which oversees the project.
Replacement for the Hellfire II on French Helicopters
The Akeron LP was designed to replace the AGM-114R Hellfire II missiles currently used by the Tiger helicopters of the French Armed Forces. Its integration is scheduled for 2028, when it will be incorporated into 40 Tiger helicopters upgraded to the Tiger Mark III standard.

Successful Test in France
The first test launch took place at the Essais de Missile missile test center in France, under the supervision of the DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement). During the evaluation, the ignition of the booster and main engine was confirmed, ensuring a range of up to 8 km in ground launch.
Additionally, the aerodynamic systems, wing deployment, and tail configuration were successfully tested, along with the missile’s guidance system capabilities.
Akeron LP Features
Designed for integration into aerial platforms such as attack helicopters, the Akeron LP weighs between 30 and 40 kg and measures 1.8 meters when stored in a special container. When launched from the air, it can hit targets at distances of up to 20 km.
The missile features an advanced three-mode seeker, utilizing TV, infrared, and semi-active laser systems, along with a bidirectional radio channel for full-flight control. This technology allows target acquisition both before and after launch.
Additionally, the Akeron LP is equipped with a tandem multi-purpose warhead, capable of penetrating over 1000 mm of armor with dynamic protection, making it effective against any modern armored vehicle.
Akeron: The Next Generation of Anti-Tank Missiles
MBDA introduced the Akeron missile family in June 2022. The portfolio includes the Akeron MP (formerly known as MMP) and the Akeron LP (ex-MHT).
The Akeron MP is already in service and stands out as the only fifth-generation anti-tank missile tested in combat. Weighing 15 kg and measuring 1.3 meters, it has a range of over 4 km and offers a “fire-and-forget” capability, allowing the operator to disengage from the target after launch.
The successful first test of the Akeron LP strengthens MBDA’s position in the next generation of anti-tank missiles, ensuring greater firepower and versatility for armed forces adopting this new technology.
